Green Candidates for New Castle County Council
    Criticize the "Freebery Four"

By J. Roy Cannon and Vincent Sottile
September 26, 2004

Candidates for New Castle County Council from the Green Party, Vince Sottile for the 7th District and J. Roy Cannon for the 9th District, are leveling criticism at the "Freebery Four", four members of county council.  In session last week, Council President Chris Coons introduced measures to stop the moving of political appointees into union protected positions and to freeze other hiring until January 5, 2005 after the current Executive Tom Gordon leaves office.

Although the measures seemed to be assured of passage, after Sherry Freebery, outgoing Chief Administrative Officer, spoke opposing the measure along with County attorney Tim Mullaney and the chief of New Castle County police, four council members voted against the measures and defeated them.  These four are three Democrats, Robert Woods, Karen Venezky and Patty Powell and Republican Bill Tansey.

Seventh district candidate Vince Sottile said:  "Although no one has yet been proven guilty, the fact that the two top executives of the county, Gordon and Freebery, are under federal indictment makes this situation different from appointments by past lame-duck executives.  Freezing appointments and hiring for four additional weeks would not create any sort of crisis in the county."

Ninth district candidate J. Roy Cannon agrees:  "The fact that the 'Freebery Four' caved in so easily to the arguments of Sherry Freebery and her minions shows that New Castle County council needs more independent council people.  Far too often, Republicans and Democrats have back room deals going which allow little margin for principle and fairness."

With the expansion of county council from six to twelve seats, now is the time for the people of New Castle County to reassert their control over their council by electing more diverse voices, independent of the controlling establishment.  Green Party candidates Vince Sottile and J.Roy Cannon take no corporate, political action committee or union contributions.  Their voices promise to remain independent of the go-along-to-get-along crowd.
